NEW THROWAWAY - 8 MONTH MACBOOK WHITE [COULD END ANYTIME]

OK, I'm not keeping this throwaway open for long as we want to get rid of a 8 month MacBook White [Perfect condition - pictured]. This throwaway could end at anytime so you need to bear that in mind if you wish to enter.

It's a total random drawing and you just send me a user thought or mobile opinion maybe something on how you use your mobile device or something on the same lines but importantly make it positive. A couple of quick guidelines. Questions to readers or opinions wanted from readers go in the forum [they are not entered]; no self site or software promotions or you will not be entered and nothing you have sent before or used elsewhere. No personal plea's as to why you want the MacBook White or what you will do with it as they are trashed immediately we want to hear your mobile thoughts and how your using your mobile device. Importantly give your user thought a title, or again you will not be entered. If your writing about a program then you must include the link so others can enjoy the program.

Open to readers and writers [writers post as normal and I'll let you know on the front page when to email me your posting number]. As mentioned previously I appreciate the people who add kind words to me in their email, a small percentage just send their thought without even saying hi or how are you, they take it for granted that they are entered into the hat, so your thoughts with add on messages are always welcome and certainly entered. Please put MACBOOK in your subject line, IMPORTANTLY give your user thought a title, otherwise you are not entered and then email - sammymcloughlin@gmail.com WRITERS PLEASE EMAIL ME THE NUMBER OF POSTS YOU UPLOADED RECENTLY TO ENTER YOU FOR THE SAMSUNG ULTRA

Eeetiger on Asus EeePC

Again, I just caught this on Liliputing. It is about Eeetiger, a modification of TigerPup for usage on Asus EeePC. TigerPup itself is a derivative of Puppy Linux 3.01. Interesting to note is that TigerPup is based on wNOP, again another derivative of Puppy Linux and, if I may say so, a cousin of NOP (Nearly Office Pup), which I use on USB flashdisk for my Asus A6J. I myself have not used TigerPup before. Of all Puppy Linux derivatives, I use NOP and MacPup (both of which are derivatives of Puppy 4 Dingo, instead of Puppy 3 series). Hope I am not confusing anyone with all these derivatives :-)  If you are interested in following the developer news, check out Barry Kauler's blog here.

centro profiles

[From malachi] I've never written to you before. I'm new to smartphone ownership, but I really appreciate the exposure PA gives to different apps that I might not otherwise know about, so here is my first shot. Thanks for reading it. I recently got my very first smartphone, a centro through Verizon. Part of the reason I got a smartphone was to get the one feature I really want in a cell phone: the ability to apply ring profiles (vibrate, silent, normal, etc.) at scheduled times of the day. I experimented with a couple of different programs to add that feature before I stumbled on to Profile Manager, a little unassuming piece of freeware that not only allows for scheduled ring profiles, but it can also set skins and other preferences and it integrates into the Palm preferences app. It is my favorite Palm application and I highly recommend it.

Macs are a perfect companion to the Treo

[From obis] I'm a palm addict. I go everywhere with my Treo 680 and my Zire 72s. I don't even go 5 minutes down the street to the grocery store without them. Also I use my Treo as a router for my laptop for internet access everywhere I have signal. What is interesting is my cell phone provider, Windows support, and Palm support were unable to assist me in setting up routing through my Treo to my laptop. Amazingly I was able to figure out what three tech support services were unable to do. In fact my cell provider told me i would have to pay a 65 dollar a month premium for this service. This obviously is not the case. Additionally, I found Macs have a script built right into the OS that allows for extremely easy setup of this service. I was able to do this on my friends Mac in about three minutes. This is something I use all the time for my crazy quad-boot laptop. I am naked without my Palms, and Macs are a perfect addition for any Palm based smart-phone user. Is this a shameless plug for Mac and Palm? Not even slightly. I just really find this service to be one of the most time-saving tools for blogging and web-development.

Instinctive Searching

Samsunginternet [From Nels C. Berkeley, CA] Hi Sammy, My mobile usage on my new Sprint Instinct has mostly been a lot of voice command searching, based on GPS location. I find it incredibly useful, as Live Search + GPS is built in. All I have to do is say a business name or look under movies and it finds the nearest locations based on my current gps location automatically. Combined with integrated, voice turn-by-turn gps, I can find pretty much anything without necessarily having to type at all, as well as directions from my current location to that spot. I find that I've been using it a lot for movies and restraunts in particular. This device impresses me more and more all the time.

TUBE Moscow (Palm OS) V3.25

TUBE Moscow (Palm OS) V3.25This seems a great program." A superb clear colour (or grey scale) map of the Moscow metro system with a find station utility. # It will automatically plan the quickest route to and from any station stating the line changes required and estimated journey time. # The route can be text listed or animated display of the route can be shown tracking around the system map. # Just holding the stylus down on any station can retrieve additional local information about that station including connections to other transport services and tourist information. # Quick zoom in/out feature. # Tube has previously won Pocket PC magazines best product award in category "Maps and Directions" at the Pocket PC Summit."

Blackjack Expert 2.7

Blackjack Expert 2.7This seems a great program."Blackjack Expert is a game simulator and testing tool combined in one easy-to-use program. As you play against the computer, your decisions are tested for correctness: actions, index plays, bet sizes, and insurance. The software comes with advanced casino options not seen in other Blackjack programs: splitting, number of decks, insurance, doubling after splits, dealer hits/stand on soft 17, ace re-splitting, and doubling limits. Whether you're just looking for a great Blackjack game or looking to learn or practice Card Counting techniques, Blackjack Expert is the fastest way to improve your game. Card Counting can give you a statistical edge over the casino so that you can actually make money playing Blackjack."

TouchBricks 1.2

TouchBricks 1.2This seems a great and fun program for all."As usual, you have to put falling blocks into lines. What is different, though, is that the blocks do not fall faster but are created more often. (The clock on the left tells you how much time is left). You can also manually get the new block into play (by clicking on the clock). Why would you want to do this? Well, if you have 2 (or more) blocks, you could select and handle the "better" one. The other reason is time (with each new block you get a new period of time, if you handle 2 blocks at once the available time is doubled)."

Diet Point Calculator 1.0

Diet Point Calculator 1.0This seems a great program, give it a go."Infodev Diet Point Calculator This easy to use software takes calories, fat, and fiber, and calculates the diet points. The points are calculate with accurate method. It has helped a lot of people in their weight loss efforts. At about 50 calories per point, if you are on a 1500 calorie per day diet, you can eat about 30 points per day. Of course, the system penalizes you for eating fat and rewards you for eating fiber. Enter in the amount of Calories, Fat and Fiber that is in the food item and calculate to get the points. The information is found on the back of food packets and jars in the Nutrition Information box. Note that Calories is displayed as kcal and is found in the Energy section."

Applications on my new 3G iPhone

PhotoHere are some screenshots of the applications I have downloaded from the iTunes store for my new 3G iPhone.  Some of them I bought and some of them are free.  I won't give urls, as all of the programs can be found by going to the iTunes store.

The first one you see is an ebook reader called Stanza.  It works like a charm and connects with my Macbook, from which it downloads books in a large variety of formats.  So far this program is free, but I think they are going to charge for it later.  Stanza will display books in both the portrait and landscape mode.

Photo2 The next program is an old standby from my Palm days - Splash Shopper.  It is really great to have this back on the iPhone.  It works just like the Palm version did, but it is so much more convenient to be able to control it with my finger.  It works in both portrait and landscape mode. It cost me $9.99 and is well worth it.  Splash Data also has a Mac program for the desktop that will sync with the iPhone and let you transfer lists and keep both the phone and desktop in sync.  It costs about $20 and they have a trial version.  I have the trial and it works like a charm.  Haven't decided whether to buy it or not.

Photo3 Next is another program from my Palm days - Acid Solitaire by Red Mercury.  A great program then and a great program now.  It works in landscape or portrait and has 3 games - Spider, Solitaire and Freecell.  It cost me $9.99 and is worth every penny.

Photo4 Up next is a wonderful Mahjong program called Shanghai Mahjong.  It only works in landscape mode.  What sets this program apart from others is that you can download, for free, extra tilesets, backgrounds and layouts directly onto the iPhone from the developer.  They are all free.  Shanghai Mahjong cost me only $4.99 and is probably the best buy of them all.  Get it!

Next up is a free program - Pandora.  I love Pandora radio and here you see it playing from one the the Baroque stations I have set up.  The main problem with Pandora is that it won't play in the background, so if you have to switch away from it the program closes.  I don't have 3G service here at home, but it works just fine under Edge.

Photo6 Another free program is Moonlite Mahjong Lite.  This program, unlike Shanghai Mahjong, allows you to resize the board, rotate it, zoom in and zoom out.  Neat and great fun to play with.  You can't change the tiles or backgrounds.  Haven't decided wether to buy the full version yet.

Photo7 Weatherbug is the next free program.  I actually prefer the Weather Underground iPhone website, but Weatherbug has some neat features that Weather Underground doesn't have.  It's worth getting.

Photo8 Finally, Fictionwise's free book reader - eReader.  Fictionwise says that it is a work in progress and will improve considerably over the coming months.  It allows me to download books from both my Fictionwise and eReader accounts.

That's it so far.  As I get some more programs I'll keep you update.  It is really neat to see some of the old line Palm developers weighing in on the iPhone front.

Proporta ensures you never misplace your keys again

Proportakeys [From Hannah at Proporta] How many of you get home from work and throw your keys on the side, never to be seen again? Proporta reckons quite a few, so it has come up with a state-of-the-art technology to prevent this frustration from ever happening again.

Samantha Ronson occupied herself with BlackBerry Bold

A celebrity made another celebrity, and that's what happened when Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson were often seen together.

The 30-year-old British DJ; Samantha Ronson became an instant celebrity as the closeness rumor between her and Lindsay Lohan is heating up. Sam’s brother’s girlfriend; Daisy Lowe recently spoke to press - declaring that the pair’s love for each other is completely genuine.

Lindsay is really down to earth. Her and Sam make a lovely couple they seem really happy. Their relationship is totally genuine. And they’re just so sweet together,” Lowe told The Sun.

She also made it clear that Samantha’s brother; Mark Ronson completely approves of the duo’s relationship, although he doesn’t enjoy going on double dates with the pair. ~LOL~

While Lindsay Lohan is filming on the set of "Ugly Betty", Samantha was spotted aimlessly strolling around Manhattan just in front of her hotel. And she turned to her BlackBerry Bold to occupied herself, it looks like Samantha and Lindsay are matching their mobile phones with the same brand (and even with the unreleased yet Bold series)...  Awww, how sweet. ;-D

It sure is nice to be a celebrity, you can get the newest gadgets before "common" people do. Source is from Gossip Girls.

Ubuntu takes the spotlight at OSCON 2008

Netbook_remix_3The OSCON 2008 that I've told you about is currently underway, and alive kicking at Portland, Oregon.

Amongst the Linux and other open source apps or OS, there's one peculiar Linux OS that has taken center stage of the convention held from July 21-25: it's Ubuntu.

But that is not an ordinary Ubuntu we usually find from the famous distro on the net, it's one of Canonical's special product; called Ubuntu Mobile Internet Device (MID). What so special about this Ubuntu Linux, is because that's designed specifically for Intel Atom-based netbooks.

If you're still clueless on what is OSCON 2008, Canonical's MID, or netbooks; then I suggest you read my previous posts by clicking at the respective links there.

Canonical has made its promise to keep the Ubuntu spirits within its MID product, where there are only few packages of interface modified, streamlined to be exact so the OS's user interface is easier to navigate on the netbook's small screen. And now Canonical called it with a new name: Ubuntu Netbook Remix. --click on the main picture to view it larger--

Robert Strohmeyer from PC World took a spin of this Ubuntu Remix beta on an Atom-based Acer One Netbook, and this is his impression:

Ubuntu_netbook "Although the Netbook's Atom processor is decidedly anemic even by subnotebook standards, the OS booted quickly. Navigation in the simplified UME menus was quick, and applications such as OpenOffice.org Writer, Firefox, and Pidgin launched about as rapidly as I would expect. Though not terribly snappy, it was competent compared with other Netbook OS installations (including Windows XP)."

Canonical's representatives indicate that they're currently working with Netbook manufacturers to offer the new OS as a standard configuration option competing directly with Windows XP on netbook market. Although At press time, they declined to comment on which company they are working with, but they did say that Netbook Remix is expected to appear on retail devices by the end of 2008.

With the growing interest on netbooks, it'll be interesting to see how the consumers will react when Ubuntu Netbook Remix hit the stores at last. And surely will become a serious consideration for "hankering" Linux die-hard boy who wanted to buy a netbook this year. ~LOL~

No Netfront 3.5 for Palm OS Centro and Treos anytime soon

Netfrontbrowser2 [From Mark McGrath] If you're hoping to get a full Netfront browser for your Treo 6xx / 700p or Centro, you better look at other options... according to a editorial by the theinquirer.net today. " MOBILE LINUX ghost-OS and micro-browsers firm Access Systems told the INQUIRER there will be no Netfront 3.5 browser for Palm devices unless Palm requests it, and that Palm has fiddled with its Garnet OS. We asked the firm if Palm OS users – for instance, owners of Palm's popular Centro – could get that 3.5 browser core in a Palm OS version (or Garnet OS as the firm likes to call it now). The answer was a polite yet predictable 'no'. What was a bit unexpected was one of the excuses cited for not offering the latest-greatest version of the firm's flagship product ported to run on, well, one of the firm's own operating systems, Garnet ... the argument that Palm has fiddled with the OS code." Read May's review at PalmDiscovery of the USB Fever’s Universal Bike Holder for PDAs

705_bicycle_bike_holder_pda_gps_pho Read May's review of the USB Fever’s Universal Bike Holder for PDAs. "One of the annoyances you may encounter while listening to music and biking is the hassle of getting access to your portable music player. Most of us will likely have it carried inside a case, or pocket. To access the portable device, we have to take it out and then make the necessary adjustments and put it back in, all the while, risking our lives if we are lazy and want to keep riding while doing it. Talk about multi-tasking! Or, we can stop and make the necessary adjustments. And if we’re listening on the headphones, that adds the extra layer of risk. But that can all be a thing of the past if you get a bike holder with mount and have it hold your portable device in front of you, easily accessible and viewable, although it’s not advised to view it for long periods of time while biking." TreoCentral reviews the Navible GB735 Bluetooth GPS Receiver

Navsmall TreoCentral reviews the Navible GB735 Bluetooth GPS Receiver. "I've had the old, Palm-issued TomTom Navigator 5 set since I went to San Francisco in the summer of 2006 and I haven’t been lost since. That TomTom set came with the TomTom 5 software, of course, a handy cradle for the Treo 650, a dual-ended Treo and mini-USB car charger, and a Palm-branded Bluetooth GPS receiver. These items have served me very well, but technology has moved forward. TomTom has released version 6 of the Navigator software. My Centro doesn’t fit in the cradle. The doggone charger, which I could REALLY use, doesn’t work anymore. And the receiver is one of those old models that take, like, a couple minutes forever to find a satellite signal, even in direct view of the sky. So, obviously, it’s time to upgrade!! I got a new cradle that fits my Centro nicely, I ordered TomTom Navigator 6, and when the opportunity to review this Navibe Bluetooth GPS (GB735) unit came up, I was all over it."

SafeGuard

SafeGuard works with Centro devices and again, is a program that offers potential. " Does your phone crash randomly? Why does your Treo/Centro crash? What application is causing the crash? How do you fix it? SafeGuard is the answer! SafeGuard's advanced Crash Detection Technology (CDT) will identify the reason for crashes on your Treo/Centro like no other application has ever done! It also knows how to recover your device from the dreaded Reset Loop of Death that comes from installing misbehaving 3rd party applications." SafeGuard retails for $19.95.

CallRec

CallRec is one of those programs that if you have a Palm OS smartphone could easily come in very handy, it runs on Treo 755p/700p/680/650 or Palm Centro. "CallRec is the premier voice recording application for Treo and Palm Centro smartphones. This simple-to-use application allows you to record your telephone conversation and voice memos with ease by simply pressing the Treo side key. Or, you can set option to automatically record all your phone calls. CallRec store files directly to the memory card and recording duration is limited only by free space on the card. With adjustable recording sample rate you can make optimal balance between sound quality and file size. Once activated, the program allows you to commence recording before or during any incoming or outgoing call with a single click. Furthermore, you can configure CallRec to automatically record all your incoming and/or outgoing calls. Share your recording and send your files by IR, Bluetooth or e-mail. "

Verizon Phasing out the Treo 755p

The Sprint Treo 755p is being phased out. "Despite appearing at the tail end of 2007, over six months after the device's debut on the Sprint network, a Verizon spokesperson has confirmed to PalmInfocenter that they are "phasing out" the Treo 755p in favor of the newer Centro. The Treo 755p is becoming increasingly scarce at Verizon retail outlets, with many having already removed their display units. The price of a new 755p on Verizon's online store has also been drastically reduced (after rebate) to match the Centro's same $99 pricetag (with 2yr contract). However, checking stock online, both as a new activation customer and an existing customer up for renewal, indicates that Verizon's 755p remains out of stock and has been so for several weeks now." Palminfocenter for the deets.

Windows Live Messenger Finally Arrives For BlackBerry

[From Hans`] OK, so Widows Live is now available for those of you with Blackberry devices. "Many companies use Windows Live Messenger for corporate IM because it's free and comes with pretty much any Windows computer they purchase. Windows Mobile users have had mobile IM love for awhile, but BlackBerry users have been left out, at least as far as official messengers go. They had already been promised an official client, and today Microsoft published it." The Gizmodo after the jump.

Treo with the new live app

Jyj Today I updated my treo by installing the new windows live app. The good news is the new push email and sync contacts. The bad news is the duplicate contacts. I also use dashwire so it was a mess and I ended up resetting my phone with a hard rest. Then I used the contacts I synced to live.com to sync to my phone. Then back to dashwrie to add the photos to my contacts. I’m in the middle of doing all this and not finished yet because I still need to do my calendar. So today my treo pissed me off and sucked up my day with contacts

iPhone bonding...a nice way I use my iPhone

Iphonefhoneframe [From Ken (Atlanta, GA)] Sammy, One of the nice side benefits of the latest iPhone software release and iTunes app store was very unexpected. My 6 yr old son and I have started bonding while using the iPhone. That's not to say we weren't already close, we are, but while playing Cro-Mag or Bejeweled 2, we have developed a healthy competition. It has been a blast. Almost an excuse to purchase the iPhone 3G for me and hand down he older one to him (like I need an excuse). It's just one of those nice little benefits with such a cool device. Keep up the good work!

Using My NOKIA E90 for Presentations.

[From Technogeekchris] Have you ever experience running-out of battery life on your laptop or forgetting to charge your battery? Most laptops do not last for more than 3 hours (fully charge) on continuous usage. Most of the time you will be lucky if you get 45mins. to 1 hour of battery life. Yesterday, on a meeting with a Client my laptop failed me. I am about to present a very important presentation that involves huge amount of transaction. When Im about to present my slideshow I found out that my laptop is not booting up. Realising that i forgot to Charge it last night.

I always keep a copy of my files on my email. I realized that I can download my Presentation thru OWA/Mail for Exchange and save it on my phone. At that instant, I realize that the latest NOKIA Quick Office can open my Presentation. I have tried connecting my NOKIA wifi to the Toshiba wireless Projector and was able to synchronize and to my surprise was able to open my slideshow thru my NOKIA E90. Even Although it was slow, I had no problem presenting for its only a 15 pages presentation.

With a success, i am able to deliver my Presentation with a BIG BANG. Not only that my presentation was a SUCCESS but I was able to impress my viewers with my E90. I guess - "Sometimes, Smart Idea comes on most Awkward Situation"...

Reminder about our latest throwaway - MacBook

I'll choose the Samsung winner at the end of today now that I have all my writers posts counted up. Just a quick reminder that I have my MacBook throwaway on at the moment which I am prone to end at anytime so just be warned, it could end today, it could end this week, I have really not too set the finish date and time so you do need to hurry, as always the guidelines are in this post. Please put MACBOOK in your subject line, IMPORTANTLY give your user thought a title, otherwise you are not entered and then email - sammymcloughlin@gmail.com"

Diddlebug is a good parking meter reminder

[From Dave from Miami, FL] Hey Sammy, hope you are having a great start to your week. Just wanted to share an experience from the weekend. Using parking meters stresses me out since I have forgot a few times and ended up with a ticket. I had my newborn with me, so I was easily distracted from the time. The issue was now solved thanks to Diddlebug. I installed it based on your suggestion. I put my money in the meter, and then made a note "Meter is due" and put a timer on it. Done and done. No ticket, and didn't have to remember it. Just wanted to give a thanks to PalmAddicts for the all of great suggestions I get here daily.

Free Ebooks From Tor.com

Torcom [From Stan Medina, OH] Hi Sammy, Thanks for all your hard work in keeping the site running and worth going to each day. I just ran across this great deal that I thought I should pass on to other PalmAddicts who like ebooks. Tor.com is giving away a handful of ebooks for a limited time. Until Sunday, July 27th, you can visit Tor.com and grab the books in a variety of formats, such as html, pdf and Mobi. It looks like they have about 24 free books plus wallpaper if you are into that. These books were originally offered individually but you can not get them all at once. If you are not familiar with them, according to their website: "Tor.com, a site for news and discussion of science fiction, fantasy, and all the things that interest SF and fantasy readers, is an initiative of Tor Books and of the Macmillan group of publishers. It presents original short fiction, new sequential art, extensive art galleries, and commentary on science fiction and related subjects by a wide range of writers from all corners of the science fiction and fantasy field. Its aim is to provoke, encourage, and enable interesting and rewarding conversations with and between its readers." Just in time too as I was starting to run low on reading material.

Mobility is a requirement, not just a plus

[From Kevin A. Thompson] My thought is that mobility of my data is no longer a plus, it’s a requirement. I need to have the ability to know what I need to be doing at any point, wherever I am. Today, I had a crash on my work machine, but since my Palm was there I still had my “to do” list while the machine was being repaired. I could still get my work done from an alternate location. Thanks, Palm!
