Chapura's PocketMirror version 2.0 has been released
Chapura's PocketMirror version 2.0 has been released. "Recently, version 2.0.0 of PocketMirror hit the App Catalog and, along with the latest version of the Windows desktop portion (which can be downloaded here), the program now syncs tasks as well as memos, calendar events and contacts. As with memos/notes, PocketMirror's syncing maintains categories across the two platforms, and can also support timed notifications (which work on the Pre even when the program's card is not open). Also as with memos, though, Chapura provides/requires its own standalone application for tasks, which is understandable, given the limits of the Pre's own native Tasks and Memos programs. " PreCentral has the deets.
I love my Palm Pre
[From Robert Graham] I love my Palm Pre. I recently switched over from my Blackberry Tour, and I am a heavy phone addict. I use my phone for email, text messaging, social networking, and multimedia. It has worked great as a camera for taking pictures while I was in California these past 3 months. Having a phone that causes people to turn heads is great. Anyways, back to the business of the phone. I love the fact that I can stay connected to people on Google Talk. Staying connected allows me to reach people in all avenues, and always stay one beat ahead of the rest. I am never at a loss of information. Sending emails is easy, and the mutiple apps that provide me with information, such as music and concerts, is great and well appreciated.
The Pre works for all my business and social needs, and it will definitely last me the next couple of months until I am anxious for the next best thing.
Switch from Palm T3 to Ipod Touch
[From Robin C. Greene ] I've finally bit the bullet and upgraded from my Palm T3 to something modern, an Ipod Touch - 32 gig model. I'll admit that I didn't have any choice as I managed to lose it on my way home from my marvelous 2 week trip to Turkey in September. I have all my book reading options in place, having installed the Kindle, Ereader, BN Ereader and Stanza apps. However, I've also installed various other apps, Facebook, Yahoo mail, Google, movie apps, the New York Times, etc. I've not replaced all the functionality of my Palm yet but there's always hope. I'm still looking for a simple Manhattan address locater along the lines of X-Man that can be used without WiFi. I'll welcome any suggestions.
I hope that everyone has had a good Holiday and will have a Happy New Year!

Apple Purchased iSlate.com in 2007. Apple's New Tablet Called iSlate?
[From Hans] As speculation for the Apple Tablet continues Macrumors points out, "With rumors of the Apple tablet reaching new highs, MacRumors has found evidence that Apple acquired the domain name iSlate.com presumably in preparation for the new device.
The iSlate.com domain was originally registered in October 2004 by a company called Eurobox Ltd. It later changed hands to Data Docket, Inc. in 2006. In 2007, however, the domain was transferred to registrar MarkMonitor.com. MarkMonitor handles domain name registrations and trademark protections for many companies, including Apple. As is typical, however, the name of the actual registrant was initially hidden to obscure the identify of the actual owner. Up until this point, one could still easily dismiss all this as a simple coincidence." Read in full.

[From William Haydon] It may not be mobile technology but it's pretty cool nevertheless, William sent me the link to this World Time Zone Map and it shows the current time right across the world. Pretty cool. Make the jump, may be something you want to bookmark.

Jailbroken iPhones can use bluetooth keyboards with their iPhones
[From Eric Mann] Jailbroken iPhones can use bluetooth keyboards with their iPhones. "The wait has been long, but now there's finally a means by which to connect your dear, yet almost buttonless, iPhone or iPod touch to a Bluetooth keyboard for some more intense finger tapping action. The project that delivered us this teasing video back in February has at long last reached the application stage, where simple commoners like us can use it to synergize our gear -- provided we've had the wherewithal to free it from Cupertino's overbearing clutches first. " Read and watch the video.

My iTouch is all purpose

[From Mike] Hi Sammy, and seasons wishes to you. I use my itouch for all my reminding, listing, recording, and gaming needs. As a long time Palm user, the initial switch was scary and sometimes frustrating. Trying to find replacements for all of my oft used programs was not easy. But now, after replacing all of my old programs with similar ones on the itouch, it's a comfortable place to be again. My T3 sits on the desk, only used when I need the Tomtom program. My itouch has become my new all-purpose device, to keep me organized and entertained.
Like Comics? Take them with you on your iPhone/Touch
I love good SciFi, but I'm not a huge fan of comics. I do like to read them, but the act of collecting them takes up a lot of room. When I found out about Comics by ComiXology, I grabbed it. This is a cool app that lets you take comic books with you on the go, and let's you (conceal) read your comics on the go.
There are several companies that are selling their comics in app, like EigoMANGA, SLG, Asylum Press, and the holy mother of all comics, MARVEL! With the new agreement with Marvel, you can now get several new and classic comics on your phone; series include: Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, and 6 X-Men series!
I grabbed several of the free comics available to play with this, and I love the system. The phone will scale each panel so you read the comic panel by panel, in either portrait or landscape. It's a very smooth system.
Comics is FREE in the US App Store.
MailTunes: A great way to make your iPhone more you
I love my iPhone and how it handles text messages, but I wished it did the same for e-mail, with custom ring tones. While I played around on the App Store for some other apps, I came across MailTones for iPhone.
MailTones lets you set custom tones for e-mail, based on rules set by you, like sender address, sender domain, subject matching, and more. You must forward a copy of all your mail to a custom MailTones e-mail address (this can be done for free from Google/Google Apps, MobileMe, and a lot of ISPs webmail, however, Yahoo! and Microsoft will only let you do this in the paid version of their mail).
After getting this app setup, I don't panic near as much when I get a buzz on my phone, because now I can see what mail I have, and I can hear what's going on!
MailTones is $2.99 in the US App Store.

21 apps Apple doesn't want on your iPhone
[From Mike Cane] Mike sent along this link to 21 apps Apple doesn't want on your iPhone and of course it's appropriate to jail-broken iPhones. Some excellent apps for your iPhone device including StatusNotifier which is free. "Summarize status icons. When you want to see at a glance that you have new SMS, e-mail, or IM messages, Apple's text-only status messages make you squint. StatusNotifier presents clear message and other status icons on the sleep screen and status bar. Free." More deets.

What I really want for Christmas
[From Lyle Beidler] I’ve been watching PA and other mobile tech blogs, and have gotten really interested in Android devices. I love my Palm TX, but it’s starting to show its age, from a capability and UI point of view. The problem is, I don’t want a smartphone – or more specifically, I don’t want to pay the $30 a month for the dataplan that a smartphone requires.
What I really want for Christmas is my dream device: a standalone device, not a smartphone, running Android, with GPS, multitouch, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc, and that has a powerful calendar & task application similar to DateBk5.
Either that, or I want Santa to bring me a smartphone plan that is $5 a month for unlimited data!

iType2Go Pro - Type, Walk and Email/Update Facebook and Twitter

Apple Tablet Demo Coming in January; Devs Already Building Apps

[From Eric Mann] More speculation on the Apple Tablet and it seems that Apple will be 'demo'ing' it in January according to Gizmodo. "Silicon Alley Insider has it from a "plugged-in source in the mobile industry" that Apple will demo their tablet in January, and have asked selected iPhone devs to prepare high-res apps for the occasion. So, what exactly is the occasion?" Read in full.
Palm Pre tips and tricks

[From Mike Reilly] Mike has just sent me the link to this itbusiness.ca page which lists some useful Palm Pre tips and tricks. "The Pre has both a touch display and a physical, full QWERTY keyboard, unlike any BlackBerry on the market - nope, RIM's Magnum is not available quite yet.
As such, the Pre device has tricks and features that require just the touch display, only the keyboard, or a combination of the two.
Read on for my first batch of Palm Pre tips, tricks, shortcuts and gestures." Read in full.

RIM Pins Outage on BlackBerry Messenger Update
[From Eric Mann] PC Mag reports that the Blackberry outage was two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger. ""Root cause is currently under review, but based on preliminary analysis, it currently appears that the issue stemmed from a flaw in two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger (versions 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56) that caused an unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure," according to RIM. "RIM has taken corrective action to restore service."" Read in full.
Blackberry servers go down again across parts of the US
[From Gregory] Gregory has just been telling me that Blackberry servers went down again in parts of the US yesterday but his is working again, so hopefully that should be the end of the problem. "The outage is also affecting BlackBerry users in South America. Research in Motion, the Canadian company that makes the BlackBerry range of mobile email devices, said that some customers were experiencing "delays in message delivery"." Telegraph after the jump.
Next-Generation iPhone May Have 5-Megapixel Camera, Sources Claim
[From Eric Mann] Digitimes claims that the new iPhone rumoured to be coming out next year will have a 5 mega-pixel camera. "Digitimes' patchy sources are claiming that OmniVision Technologies—the current manufacturers of the iPhone 3GS' 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor—has won a new contract with Apple to provide the Cupertino company with new sensors for the next-generation 2010 iPhone." The Giz has the deets.
Gizmodo provides a hands on with the Google Nexus One
[From Eric Mann] Gizmodo provides a hands on with the Google Nexus One. "The Nexus One is slightly thinner than the iPhone 3GS, and slightly lighter. No hard specs were thrown around, unfortunately, since Google didn't even let people who they gave the phone to know that. The back is definitely not cheap and plasticky, like the iPhone's backing, and feels like some sort of rubbery material. So, not smooth like the iPhone, but not as rubbery as the Droid. It's halfway in-between." Read in full.
An iPhone for Christmas

[From Brian Cleary] Sammy I got my Christmas present early and it's a 3GS iPhone, how lucky am I. I'm so excited to see what I can do and what apps to download. My wife wasn't going to allow me to use it until Christmas Day, I simply could not wait.
Pre better than the Droid
[From Lee M, NJ] The Motorola Droid is nice but I do prefer the Palm Pre, I got to play with the Droid recently, it's a great example of how phones should be designed but in the end I prefer my Palm Pre. Accessing the internet on the Pre is a great experience, it's fast and allows me to be able to stay in contact with everyone. By the way Sammy I agree Tweed is a great twitter app for the Pre, makes it more fun being able to update twitter when out of reach of a computer.
3 weeks in and I love my Palm Pre
[From Dave Kenton] Good morning Sammy I hope you are well, I'm new to the Palm Pre, I've only had it three weeks but so far I like it. The keyboard is great to type on, great for long emails. I also entertain myself listening to music, watching You Tube videos. It's small and compact enough to fit into my pocket and I like having notifications to tell me when I get new email or facebook messages. Thank you Sammy for a great site and I hope you and your readers have a peaceful Christmas.
SPB Software Invites Everyone to Improve Language Skills with the Help of SPB Flash Cards
[From SPB Software] SPB Software, a leading maker of mobile applications, announces the release of SPB Flash Cards, a learning software created to quickly and effectively expand one's word stock in a language under study. The software provides over 1000 cards in Czech, German, English, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and Swedish, all dubbed by native speakers of respective languages.
SPB Flash Cards provides great assistance in learning a new language, although it has no claim to be the sole mean of doing that. When mastering a new language, it is crucial to skip the stage of translating a word into mother tongue first, memorizing a direct match of a subject and a foreign word instead. SPB Flash Cards software is aimed at just that - the process of learning begins with a new flash card appearing, showing an image of an item along with the matching word and the right pronunciation from a native speaker. But this is just the beginning - several other memorizing techniques are also included. Besides, SPB Flash Cards contains a smart algorythm to track the user's progress and adapt further learning process accordingly.

SPB Flash Cards Main Features:
- 5 different learning modes
- 14 languages to learn
- 1000+ words in every language
- 65 sections, such as Food, Transport and Clothes
- Create your own cards on SPB website
Pricing and Availability
SPB Flash Cards is available in 12 different versions:
- SPB Chinese Cards
- SPB Czech Cards
- SPB Dutch Cards
- SPB German Cards
- SPB English Cards
- SPB French Cards
- SPB Hebrew Cards
- SPB Italian Cards
- SPB Japanese Cards
- SPB Korean Cards
- SPB Portuguese Cards
- SPB Spanish Cards
- SPB Swedish Cards
SPB Flash Cards is compatible with touchscreen devices based on Windows Mobile version 5.0 and above. Each version may be purchased for 9.95 USD, or a 15-day free trial version may be downloaded at www.spb.com.

Motley Fool asks whether Palm is too late to the game?
[From Eric Mann] Motley Fool asks whether Palm is too late to the game? "In the aftermath of Palm's earnings dud, estimates took a huge nosedive. The company's now expected to lose $0.75 per share in its May 2010 fiscal year, and post a profit of just $0.02 per share in the following year, as soaring sales and marketing expenses help offset revenue growth. Now more than ever, a marriage between Palm and Nokia (NYSE: NOK), would make sound business sense. Palm's ability to succeed as an independent company is very much in question at this point, and Nokia, for its part, is steadily bleeding smartphone share to Apple and RIM (and maybe soon, the Android bunch).
Nokia, unlike Palm, does have the resources and brand power to reverse its smartphone fortunes. But as Palm's struggles show, this is a market where time is of the essence." Read in full.
Google Android Official Merchandise
Blogging Stocks profiles Palm's financial status but wants it could be suffocated by Google Android.

[From Eric Mann] Blogging Stocks profiles Palm's financial status but wants it could be suffocated by Google Android. "2010 will see a ton of shipments from Palm as it recovers from the brink that was 2008 to mid-2009. Still, it faced enormous challenges with Google's Android platform launching across multiple handsets and carriers and what is sure to be a complete refresh of the Apple iPhone sometime in 2010. For now, just one look at a recent comScore tally suggests Palm isn't going anywhere, even though it continues to sell a decent number of handsets. If Palm isn't careful, it will be suffocated by Google's Android " Read in full.
